🏥 The Pakistani Doctor's Path Through Ireland

Many Pakistani families ask: what happens after an Irish medical degree? Here is the full pathway — from graduation to IMC registration to practising as a doctor. VizGuides has a dedicated IMC Registration Guide for Pakistani doctors at every stage.

  • 01 Complete MB BCh BAO (5–6 years) at an Irish medical school
  • 02 Complete 1-year Intern year in an approved Irish teaching hospital
  • 03 Apply for full registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC)
  • 04 Apply for a Medical Council Certificate of Experience (for returning to Pakistan or applying internationally)
  • 05 Optionally pursue specialty training (RCPI, RCSI programmes) in Ireland or the UK
⚠️ Important: Medical Fees Are Very High — Plan Carefully

International (non-EU) fees for medicine in Ireland range from €45,000 to €58,000 per year — over a 5-year degree, total tuition alone can reach €225,000–€290,000. Living costs add approximately €12,000–€18,000/year on top. This is one of the most significant financial investments a Pakistani family can make. Research scholarships, bank finance options, and discuss all costs carefully before applying.

What is the HPAT — Do Pakistani Students Need It?

The HPAT (Health Professions Admission Test) is an admissions test for EU/Irish students applying through the CAO system. Most Pakistani students applying directly as non-EU applicants do not need to sit the HPAT.

What is the HPAT?
A 2.5-hour multiple choice aptitude test covering logical reasoning, problem solving, interpersonal understanding, and non-verbal reasoning. It does not test academic knowledge — it tests thinking skills. Used by Irish medical schools alongside Leaving Certificate points to rank EU applicants.
🇵🇰
Do Pakistani Students Need It?
Generally no — Pakistani students applying directly from Pakistan as non-EU students apply through each university's international admissions office, not through the Irish CAO system. RCSI, TCD, and UCD all confirm non-EU applicants are not required to sit HPAT. Always confirm directly with your chosen school.
📚
What If I'm an EU Resident?
If you have EU residency status (e.g. you have lived in an EU country for 3+ years), you may be classified as an EU applicant and required to apply through the CAO — which does include the HPAT. Check your fee status with each institution before applying to confirm your route.

💡 Work rights during medicine: Student visa holders can work 20 hours/week during term. However, medicine is an extremely demanding programme — many medical students find part-time work very difficult to sustain during clinical years. Factor this into your financial planning and do not rely on part-time income to cover tuition.

Medicine in Ireland — Your Questions Answered

The most common questions from Pakistani students and families considering medicine in Ireland.

Can Pakistani students study medicine in Ireland with FSc Pre-Medical? +
Yes. FSc Pre-Medical is the standard qualification for Pakistani students applying to Irish medical schools. You will need strong results — particularly in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. RCSI explicitly requires 90%+ overall for the 5-year track and 80%+ for the 6-year track, with 75%+ in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics/Maths. TCD, UCD, UCC, and Galway assess each case individually — contact their international admissions offices with your specific results for guidance.
Is the Irish MB BCh BAO degree recognised in Pakistan? +
The Irish MB BCh BAO is a foreign medical degree and is eligible for recognition by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC). Graduates returning to Pakistan must apply to the PMC through their foreign degree recognition process and typically sit a qualifying examination. We strongly recommend verifying the current PMC process directly on their official website before making a decision, as requirements can change.
Do Pakistani students need to sit the HPAT to study medicine in Ireland? +
For most Pakistani students applying directly from Pakistan as non-EU applicants — no. The HPAT is an admissions test used by Irish medical schools for EU/Irish/UK applicants who apply through the Irish Central Applications Office (CAO) system. Non-EU international students apply directly to each university, not through CAO, and are therefore not required to sit the HPAT. RCSI confirms this explicitly. However, always verify with your specific chosen school, as policies can vary.
Which Irish medical school is best for Pakistani students? +
There is no single best choice — it depends on your academic results, budget, and priorities. RCSI has the largest non-EU intake (225 places/year) and the most clearly defined international entry requirements, making it the most accessible and transparent option. UCC and the University of Galway are the most affordable by tuition fee. TCD offers the most prestigious degree globally but is the most competitive and most expensive. We recommend applying to 2–3 schools simultaneously.
What is the total cost of studying medicine in Ireland for a Pakistani student? +
Over a 5-year programme, the total cost for a non-EU student (tuition + living) is approximately €275,000–€340,000 depending on the institution and city. UCC and Galway are the most affordable combinations. This is a very large financial commitment and requires careful long-term financial planning. Some families use bank education loans; others are self-funded. RCSI offers a merit scholarship (Consilio Manuque) for self-funded international offer holders.
Can I register with the IMC after an Irish medical degree and stay to work in Ireland? +
Yes. After completing your MB BCh BAO and a 1-year internship in an approved Irish teaching hospital, you are eligible to apply for full registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC). As a non-EU graduate with a valid job offer, you can then apply for a Critical Skills Employment Permit — doctors are on Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List. VizGuides has a full dedicated IMC Registration Guide covering every step of this process for Pakistani doctors.
What is the 6-year medicine track at RCSI and Galway? +
Some medical schools offer a 6-year entry route that includes an additional Foundation Year at the start of the programme. This is designed for students whose results are strong but narrowly below the direct 5-year entry threshold. At RCSI, the 6-year track requires 80%+ overall in Grade 12 (vs 90%+ for the 5-year track). The Foundation Year provides intensive science preparation before the main medical curriculum begins. The final degree qualification is the same MB BCh BAO.
Can Pakistani doctors who already graduated apply to Irish medical schools as graduate entry? +
Pakistani doctors who already hold an MBBS or equivalent may be able to apply for Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programmes at RCSI, UCD, UCC, and Galway — these are 4-year accelerated programmes requiring a bachelor's degree and a GAMSAT or MCAT score. However, Pakistani doctors with a recognised degree looking to register in Ireland typically have a different route available: IMC registration through the International Medical Graduate (IMG) process. See our dedicated IMC Registration Guide for Pakistani doctors.
