Foundation Courses โ€” Your Questions Answered

Common questions from international students considering a Foundation Year in Ireland.

Who is a Foundation Year designed for? +
Foundation Years are for international students whose secondary school qualifications or English language scores don't meet direct university entry requirements. They are common among students from countries whose curricula are not directly mapped to Irish entry standards, students with IELTS below 6.0, or students who narrowly missed university entry grades and want to improve before starting a degree.
Is progression to university guaranteed after a Foundation Year? +
At UCD (Dublin ISC) and TU Dublin, progression is guaranteed if you achieve the required grades โ€” typically 60%+ overall. TCD offers a conditional university place pending successful completion. DCU's progression is to their own programmes and partner institutions. Griffith College has its own progression pathways. Always confirm the specific progression route and grade requirements with your chosen institution before applying.
What IELTS score do I need for a Foundation Year in Ireland? +
Most Foundation Year programmes in Ireland accept IELTS Academic scores of 4.5โ€“5.5, which is significantly lower than the 6.0โ€“6.5 typically required for direct university entry. This makes Foundation Years an accessible option for students whose English is still developing. The Foundation Year itself includes intensive English language training to bring you to university-ready level by the end of the programme.
Is there a January intake for Foundation Courses in Ireland? +
Yes โ€” UCD (Dublin ISC) and TU Dublin both offer January intakes for their Foundation Year programmes. This is particularly useful for students whose secondary school results or IELTS scores arrive after the September deadline. TCD, DCU, Griffith, and Maynooth are September-only for their Foundation programmes.
Which is the cheapest Foundation Year in Ireland? +
TU Dublin and Griffith College both charge approximately โ‚ฌ9,000/year for non-EU students โ€” the lowest fees on this list. TU Dublin is particularly strong value as it also offers a January intake, is located in Dublin city centre, and provides a guaranteed progression route. For students seeking the highest-ranked university pathway, UCD (โ‚ฌ18,500) and TCD (โ‚ฌ18,950) are more expensive but offer entry into world-ranked universities.
